How many faucets?

Repair the cartridge, or replace the faucet?
Not every dripping tap needs a new faucet. These six signs tell you which side of that line you're on.
Drip from the spout
Water dripping from the spout with the tap off is almost always a worn cartridge, washer or seat. That's a repair, not a replacement.
Water at the base of the faucet
Puddling around the base plate means the O-rings or the deck seal have failed. On older taps this often tips the balance toward replacing.
Weak or sputtering stream
Check the aerator first — a screw-on tip clogged with mineral debris causes most low-flow complaints in a couple of minutes.
Squeaking or stiff handle
Grinding or resistance as you turn the handle means the cartridge stem is wearing. Catch it early and it's a cheap fix.
Corrosion or crusty mineral build-up
White scale and green crust around the body are cosmetic at first, but they pit the finish and seize the internals over time.
It keeps needing repairs
If you've replaced the cartridge twice and it's still dripping, the tap body is worn out. A new faucet stops the cycle.
Faucet won't shut off?
Close the shut-off valves under the sink — clockwise until snug. Don't force them if they're seized; close the main supply instead and open the tap to relieve the pressure. Then put a towel down and give us a call.
Which faucet fits your sink?

One hole
One combined body with the spout and handle together. Cleanest look and easiest to fit.
Fits: a single-hole sink. Can also cover a 3-hole sink with a deck plate.

Compact two-handle unit, most common in older bathrooms and utility sinks.
Fits: three holes set 4 inches apart centre to centre.

A drip from the spout with the tap off is almost always a worn cartridge, washer or valve seat — that's a repair, and it's the cheaper option on any faucet worth keeping. Replacement makes sense when the body itself is leaking at the base, the finish is badly pitted or corroded, you've already replaced the cartridge once and it's still dripping, or you simply want a different style. Our plumbers will tell you honestly which side of that line you're on rather than defaulting to a new tap.
Count the holes in your countertop and measure the distance between the outer two. One hole takes a single-hole faucet. Three holes set 4 inches apart take a centreset. Three holes set 6 to 16 inches apart take a widespread. A single-hole faucet can also cover three holes with a deck plate. Buying the wrong configuration is the most common reason a new faucet gets returned, which is why mounting is one of the questions in the calculator above.
Yes — close the small shut-off valves under the sink before disconnecting anything. Please do try turning them gently beforehand, because if they're seized or leaking from the stem we need to know so we can bring replacements. Never force a stuck valve; close the main supply instead and leave the tap open to relieve the pressure. We replace seized shut-offs as part of the job rather than leaving you with a valve you can't use in an emergency.
A like-for-like kitchen or bathroom faucet in an accessible location is typically one to two hours. Tub and shower taps run one and a half to three hours because of the valve and trim. Jobs that need a new hole drilled in the countertop, or a wall-mount valve roughed in, take considerably longer. Your written estimate includes the expected window before any work begins.
Nine times out of ten it's the aerator. Debris dislodged during installation collects in the little screen on the tip of the spout and chokes the flow. Unscrew it, flush it out, and the stream usually comes straight back. If that doesn't fix it, the supply lines may be kinked, the angle stops may not be fully open, or there's debris caught in the cartridge — all of which we check and correct as part of the install.
