When your kitchen needs a plumber
The kitchen gets more daily use than any other plumbing in the house. These six signs mean something needs attention before it becomes water in the cabinet base.
Warped or swollen cabinet base
A puffy, peeling or soft cabinet floor means a slow drip has been running long enough to soak the board. The plumbing fix is usually simple — the cabinet may not be.
Disposal hums but won't grind
That humming is the motor spinning freely with the impeller jammed. Sometimes it's a stuck object; sometimes the unit is done.
Low pressure at the kitchen only
If the rest of the house is fine, the cause is local — a clogged aerator, a kinked supply line, or a partially closed angle stop.
Banging or hammering pipes
Loud knocking when the tap shuts off is water hammer — loose pipes or failed air chambers. Left alone it can shake joints loose over time.
Drain that clears then slows again
Grease coats the pipe wall and narrows the bore. Each clear punches a hole through it, and the next round of grease catches again.
Dishwasher water backing up
Grey water surfacing in the sink when the dishwasher drains means a blocked shared drain or a missing high loop in the hose.
Water under the sink right now?
Close both shut-off valves under the sink — clockwise until snug. If a valve is seized or leaking from the stem, don't force it; close the main supply instead. Pull everything out of the cabinet and put a bowl under the trap while you wait.

Grease is almost always the answer. When fat goes down the drain warm and liquid, it cools and solidifies against the pipe wall. Each pass leaves a slightly narrower bore, so debris catches sooner and the drain slows again. Snaking punches a hole through the blockage but leaves the coating behind, which is why the problem returns within weeks. A proper line clean scours the grease off the walls rather than just breaking through it.
Repair is worth it when the fix is a reset button, a jammed impeller freed with an allen key, or a new mounting gasket. Replacement usually makes more sense when the unit is leaking from the housing itself, the motor hums without turning and won't free up, or the disposal is over about eight years old. We'll tell you which situation you're in rather than defaulting to a new unit.
If you're replacing an existing unit in the same spot and the valves are in good shape, it's often a straightforward swap. But the drain connection has to be done correctly — the hose needs a high loop or an air gap so waste water can't siphon back into the dishwasher, and many jurisdictions require an air gap at the sink. Getting that wrong is one of the most common causes of dishwasher odour and backflow. We fit the supply, drain and trap properly and test it under load.
Every drain needs air behind the water to vent properly. A sink against a wall reaches the vent stack directly. A sink in an island can't, so it needs a loop vent routed under the floor or an approved air admittance valve. It's a genuine code requirement rather than a nice-to-have — without it you get slow draining and gurgling. That's why island sinks are a separate option in the calculator above.
Usually not. Faucets, disposals, traps and supply lines are all reached through the sink opening or the cabinet below. A countertop or backsplash only comes into it when a tap has to be repositioned, when moving from a three-hole to a single-hole fitting without a cover plate, or when replacing a drop-in sink with a different sized cut-out. When surfaces are involved we cut carefully and leave them ready for your installer to finish.
