Line length to replace
Most residential laterals run 30 to 100 ft from the house to the city main. The camera inspection measures the exact run — which is why length is never guessed at.
When the line can't be repaired
Jetting and root cutting are maintenance. These six findings mean the pipe itself is done — and spending more on clearing it is money down the drain.
The camera shows a collapsed pipe
A flat, crushed or fully offset pipe has no bore left to line or clear. Replacement is the only option, and backups will keep coming until it's done.
A bellied or sagging section
Part of the pipe has sunk, creating a low spot where waste pools and solids settle. No amount of clearing fixes gsumanty.
You have Orangeburg pipe
Tar-paper pipe from the 1940s–70s softens, blisters and flattens under load. It cannot be repaired, patched or lined reliably — only replaced.
Roots throughout the whole line
Roots at every joint mean every seal has failed. Cutting them clears this month's blockage and guarantees next season's.
Clearing it keeps failing
If you've been jetted or snaked two or three times in the past couple of years, you're maintaining a dead pipe. Add it up — replacement is usually cheaper.
Original clay or cast iron, 50+ year home
Original lateral pipe is at or past design life. Replacing on your schedule beats an emergency dig in January.
Sewage backing up right now?
Stop using water and hold off on the washing machine and dishwasher — every gallon you send down has to come back up. Keep people and pets out of the affected room. Raw sewage is a health hazard, so don't wait it out.
Three ways to replace a lateral
All three leave you with a new, warrantied line. Which one suits you depends on the pipe's condition, its depth and what sits above it.
CIPP Lining
Trenchless · relining
A resin-saturated liner is pulled in and cured inside the old pipe, forming a seamless new pipe within it.
- check_circleOne or two small access pits
- check_circleLawn & hardscape stay intact
- check_circleRoot-resistant, ~50 yr rating
- remove_circleWon't fix a belly or a collapsed run
Needs: a pipe that still holds its shape.
Pipe Bursting
Trenchless · replacement
A bursting head fractures the old pipe outward while a new HDPE pipe is pulled through behind it.
- check_circleBrand-new full-diameter pipe
- check_circleCan upsize the line's capacity
- check_circleHandles collapsed sections lining can't
- remove_circleNeeds pull pits at each end
Needs: suitable soil and room for the pulling equipment.
Open-Trench
Traditional · excavation
The old line is dug out and a new pipe laid on fresh bedding at the correct fall. The benchmark.
- check_circleVisually confirms the entire run
- check_circleOnly method that fixes a belly
- check_circleNew cleanout & connection included
- remove_circleHeaviest restoration & longest timeline
Needs: room for equipment and a restoration budget.
Who pays — you or the city?
In most U.S. municipalities the homeowner owns the sewer lateral from the house all the way to the city main — including the section under the sidewalk or street. A few cities own part of it, and some offer voluntary lateral insurance programs. We pull the local records and confirm exactly where your responsibility ends before quoting, so you're never surprised.
Restoration is a real cost
The pipe is often the smaller part of an open-trench quote. Topsoil and seed are cheap; re-pouring a driveway, resetting pavers or re-tiling a basement floor is not. That's why restoration is its own question in the calculator — and its own line in your written estimate, never bundled or hidden.

Frequently Asked Questions
Because sewer replacement has the widest price range of anything in residential plumbing. Two 60-foot laterals on the same street can differ by a multiple based on depth, whether the line has bellied, what has to be saw-cut and re-poured, whether a right-of-way permit and traffic control are needed, and local disposal fees. Anyone quoting a firm number from a form alone is guessing. We run a camera first, measure the actual length and depth, then hand you an itemized written estimate for each method.
No, and anyone who tells you otherwise is selling you something. Liner and bursting equipment cost more per foot than open-trench pipe, so on a short, shallow run with easy access, digging is often the cheaper route. Trenchless usually wins when the alternative means saw-cutting a driveway, removing a deck, or tearing out mature landscaping — because restoration costs more than the method difference. That's exactly why we quote all three side by side rather than steering you.
Often, yes. CIPP lining and pipe bursting both work through one or two small access pits, which usually means the lawn, garden beds, patio and driveway stay untouched. But trenchless has real limits — it can't correct a bellied section, it needs the old pipe to hold some shape, and it needs room at each end for equipment. When those limits apply, open-trench is the right answer and we'll say so. When we do trench, we section off the work, and restoration is quoted as its own line so you know exactly what goes back.
In most U.S. municipalities, yes. The homeowner owns the lateral from the house all the way to the city main, including the portion under the sidewalk and street. Some cities own a share, and a few offer voluntary lateral insurance programs worth checking into. Because this varies genuinely by jurisdiction, we pull the local records and confirm where your responsibility ends before we quote — so the scope is settled before money is discussed.
Yes — sewer replacement essentially always requires a plumbing permit, an inspection at completion, an 811 utility locate before digging, and a separate right-of-way permit if any work happens in the street or sidewalk. We file all of it and schedule the inspections ourselves. The fees appear as their own lines in your written estimate. Please don't accept unpermitted sewer work: it creates real problems with insurance claims and with disclosure when you sell the house.
Usually not for the pipe itself. Standard policies tend to cover sudden water damage inside the home but exclude the underground lateral, treating gradual deterioration as a maintenance issue. Many insurers sell optional service line coverage or a sewer backup endorsement that does help — worth checking your declarations page. Either way, we provide the camera footage, photos and itemized documentation your adjuster will ask for, which makes any claim substantially easier.
A properly installed cured-in-place liner is generally rated around 50 years, and new HDPE or SDR-35 PVC laid on correct bedding at the right fall is rated similarly or better. That's the whole argument for replacing rather than repeatedly clearing: clearing is maintenance with a lifespan measured in months, while replacement is measured in decades. Both manufacturer material warranty and our workmanship warranty are passed through to you.
